We made a reservation through Expedia, which gave us two or three options as I remember.
We stayed in Fairfield Inn in August 2005, which is close to Bar Harbor (Drive 3 to 5 minutes). It was not clean, but it was OK when considering price.

When we visited, we saw lots of B&B and hotels in Bar Harbor.
There were two big and very good accomodation places in front of harbor.
One is BAR HARBOR INN (looked pricy), but I cannot remember the other one.

I don’t know how old your kids are.
There are lots of activities availble.

I saw lots of kids having a class for Kayaking in front of Harbor.
We went to Whale watching, which must be exciting for kids.

There is no “Steamed Lobster” on the menu. If you want to have one, just ask them.
We worried it might be too expensive, but it was cheaper than you buy in the market.
Clam or Mussle was really good, too.
