I was also thought it is similar but I found it is very different.
Someone said US is a melting pot, but Canada is a mosaic.
Here is what I felt so far living in Canada last 17 years.
I live in Quebec, where French tradition is dominant. French is an official language in Quebec. Montreal is the one of major cities in Canada. There were 3 times of referendum to vote Quebec to stay in Canada or independent. But people decided to stay in Canada. Still some political party and people support Quebec become an independent country.
Canada has accepted immigrants since 1960’s. Population is only 37 Million.
Canada is one of Commonwealth. We have coins with Queen Elizabeth’s face on them.
Big difference with US is health care system and tax rate. Once citizen, permanent resident, or work permit holder don’t pay most of health service. (Dental and eye doctor are exclusive.) but nothing is free. We pay lot of tax. Sales tax in Quebec is 15%. Income tax is also high. tax rate depends on income so there is no single number but it is way higher than US for sure.
In US, society tempts you to spend more. But in Canada, we spend less because tax rate is high, make less money.
Asian is a minority still in Canada. But here, Asians have more opportunities than in US. I felt racism is major problem in US.
