Salt Lake City office에서 두 차례에 걸쳐 두 팀과 면접을 봤습니다. 제가 Java 경험이 더 많은것으로 봐서는 credit risk 팀의 Sr. Analyst/Developer position이 좀 더 맞는듯도 하고, C++를 주로 사용한다는 Equities 팀도 면접 분위기 상으로는 좀 더 팍팍하지만 흥미가 있을듯 한데…

혹시 두 분야에 대해 아시면 좀 이야기 해 주시죠.  저는 software engineer로서의 경력만 있습니다.  수학은 적당히 할만큼 하구요.

물론 offer 를 줄지 말지는 몇일 더 있어 봐야겠지만, 이곳에서 이야기를 좀 들어 보고 싶습니다.

골드만삭스에서 몇년전에 백오피스 인원들 상당수를 뉴욕 본사에서 Utah주 솔트레이크로 옮겼습니다. 금융위기후 비용절감 차원에서 이루어진 대규모 이동이었죠.

주로 오퍼레이션에 관련된 부서들이 이쪽으로 옮겼는데, 일부 IT부서들도 같이 옮겼고요. 원글님이 인터뷰 하신 포지션은 이쪽 백오피스에 관련된 직종인것 같네요.

암만 골드만삭스 회사라고 하더라도, 뉴욕 본사하고 솔트레이크 백오피스는 여러가지 면에서 차이가 많이 날것 입니다. 일단 일 자체는 그렇게 빡쎄지는 않고 널널한 편에 속할것 입니다. 그리고 이쪽 동네가 뉴욕에 비해서는 훨씬 깨끗하고 공기 좋고, 이미 결혼하신 분이면 살기는 좋을수도 있겠습니다.

단점은, 아시다시피 이쪽 분야는 ‘보너스’를 거진 못받는 분야입니다. 사실상 보너스 ‘빵’불 이라고 보시면 됩니다. 아주 잘 받는 경우에는 10%~15% 정도…..

2000년대 중반쯤에, 금융권 최고 전성기였을때는 골드만삭스 ‘백오피스’ 직원들도 보너스 70%씩 받았던 시절이 있었습니다. 예를들어 기본급 10만에 보너스 7만 합쳐서 총 17만불.

무지막지 했죠. 이제 이런 전설들은 호랑이 담배 피던 아주 옛날 이야기가 되어 버렸고요.
