저희가족은 올 4월중순경 취업이민갑니다. 그런데 저희남자아이가 이번에 초등학교를 졸업하고 중학교를 입학할예정입니다. 여기서 질문드리고자하는것은 우리아이가 2달정도면 미국가는데 중학교에 입학을 해서 갈때까지 학교다니다 가야되는지요 아니면 그냥 영어와수학공부를 학원에서 갈때까지공부하는것이 좋은지 여러선배님께 고귀한 의견듣고싶습니다
이곳엔 5월부터 여름방학인걸로 알고 있는데…
결국 4월말에는 시험치고 공부도 흐지부지 한것 아닐까요? 이곳은 겨울방학에 비해 여름방학이 워낙 길어서 나름데로 계획을 세우시길 바랍니다. 그렇지 않으면 집에서 인터넷이나 하다가 빈둥거리게 되니까요. 이곳 써머캠프는 많이 비싸고 미국오자 마자 비싼돈 주고 시키는것이 좀 그러니까 가까운 교회나 성당에 공짜로 하는 프로그램들도 괜찮아요. 만약 종교가 있으시다면 어차피 교회친구들 미리 사귀는것이니까요. 이곳에서 하는 프로그램들도 길지 않아 부지런한 분들은 몇몇 미국교회 프로그램 날짜가 다르니까 연결해서 보내더군요. 어차피 이곳에 이민 오신거면 조급하게 생각하지 마시고 학교도 많이 써치 하시고 만약 사시는 곳에 학교가 마음에 들지 않으면 다른학교 gift And talent반 시험치는것도 고려하시고… 제경험으로 미국교육은 중학교 선택이 엄첨 중요합니다. 잘 살펴 보시고 현지에 사는 한인들에게 정보 많이 받고 선택하십시요. 주변에 의외로 중학교 다니는 이민자가 많지 않아서 제가 괜히 나서서 이렇게 글을 올렸습니다.
Oh well, I brought my kid sometime ago in April and he was about to highschool (worse than your case Huh?) I can’t tell you if this is success ot failure, but I am just gonna tell you the story.
I put him on a after-school English class (I am almost sure you don’t need after school math there^^). It helps him to adapt himself here I believe not because the class enhanced his proficiency but he could be mentally more prepared. During the Summer (As 수키 said the summer vacation starts early and long…) he attended basket ball class since he liked (still does) playing basket ball. That was good opportunity to get used with not only language but other environmental things, and good to make a friend without being too afraid of language. I had to spend some extra for his private tutor though. (Did I say he was about to go high school not middle?) Still he had not-so-easy time and had to carry handicap over to the college probably. If you want to know, high school here is more like college in Korea than high school. (Fortunately middle school is not…) If you don’t have a certain class at your freshamn year, that pretty much determines your class at senior year so have to carefully plan from the beginning. How could he take the best one from the begining? I feel sorry for that. Anyway that’s me.
