저는 센터빌에 거주지를 잡은 주부입니다.
무작정 남편 직장따라 와서 보니 여기도 아이들 교육비가
만만치 않다고 들어서 걱정입니다.
미국나이로 8세,6세 그리고 막내가 21개월되었습니다.
큰아이는 당장 학교를 보내야하고 작은아이는 유치원에 보내야 할것 같은데
초등학교에 보내게 되면 영어학원에 보내야 따라간다고 하더군요.
그리고 음악이랑 운동도 가르쳐야하고요.
유치원보육비도 장난아니라고 하고…
아이가 어려서 맞벌이는 안되고…
한국에서도 사교육비때문에 문제였는데 여기도 예전과 다르게 그런가
아님, 보내는 사람들만 보내는 건지 궁금합니다.
집세랑 생활비 교육비 생각해보니 계산이 안되어서 질문드립니다.
경험있으신 분은 조언부탁드립니다.

You don’t have to send them to after-school English school. Kids are flexible, they catch up very quickly.
Preschools are expensive but if they are 6, you could send them to Kinder in public school, which is free. And you can take care of your 21 months-old at home.
음악이랑 운동도 가르쳐야하고요.
Forget about it for at least 2 years. They need to learn English first. Check if the school has free music instrument and sports program meanwhile.
Take it slow and be patient with them.

In addition to what “tt” commented very well, you don’t need worry about extra cost for private teaching your children as like Korean people does in Korea.(Unless you are going to teach them really expensive extra private study or art/music,etc)

I have three chilrens(4th, 3rd and Kindergarten), but nevery worried about extra cost so far 7 years in U.S.

You better on-site visit school administrator or your children’s teacher to get their opinion how your children can catch up english things.

It seems like early elementary student (1,2,3) can catch up english very fast(6 months to 1 year would be good enough to catch up english in the class).

Every year you should receive some sort of invitation letter to register your children to local soccer league or baseball league with very cheap cost from school or from local community.(its not mendatory, you can choose for your children which one is best)

제가 그동네를 조금 알거던요.
그 동네에서 디시의 조지타운-버지니아 랭리, 그레이트 폴스가 제일 잘살고 그다음이 맥클린-알링턴이고 그 다음이 온톤-폴스처지 그 다음이 비엔나, 패어옥스-패어레익스, 그리고 패어팩스 카운티의 제일 끝인 센터빌이죠.

얼토당토않게 잘사는 이야기 하는 것은

알링턴/패어팩스에 미국 공립학교 상위 100개중에 10개인가 20개인가가 있거던요? 그리고 토마스 제퍼슨인가 하는 소위 말하는 카운티 과학고가 있는데 이게 뉴욕시의 과학고등학교인 헌터하고 거의 삐까삐까하죠. 제퍼슨의 SAT평균이 1480 (웬만한 일반 공립학교는 한학교에서 10명도 안나오는 점수죠) 헌터 평균이 1500정도이니까. 무지막지한 학교들이죠.

근데 아까 말한 잘사는 동네들은 진짜 부자들이 살거든요? 개들은 미국애들도 한국에서 부는 치맛바람은 쨉도 안되는 치맛바람에 사교육을 받죠. 라크로스라고 백인연자애들이 해서 아이비 학교들 들어가는 괘상한 운동있잖아요? 그런 것 하고 다니고 그러죠.

거기에 한국 사람들은 주로 비엔나 이후로 좀 외곽 쪽에 사는데 (돈이 조금 부족한 관계로…) 그래도 대부분의 젊은 한국 부부들은 대부분 전문직을 가지고 있고 소득수준이 상당히 높은 편이죠.

패어팩스 전체 가구당 미디언 인컴이 2002년도인가에 99000이었고 작년 옥톤 하고 맥클린 가구당 미디언 인컴이 150000에서 160000이었으니까… 이 동네에는 히스패닉들도 적지 않은데 도대체 부자들이 돈을 얼마나 버는지 … 참 부럽고 열받죠.

어쨌던 한국사람들도 100000이상으로 버는 사람들이 꽤 많이 있으니까 자식들한테 많이 돈을 쓰죠. 위에서 말씀하신 것처럼 영어랑 뭐 기타 등등 그냥 냅두면 조금 애가 힘들고 고생하고 하지만 결국은 따라가죠. 근데 문제는 … 그냥 따라가지 절대로 앞서가지는 못하죠. 딴애들이 옆에서 워낙 시켜대니까 순식간에 차이가 팍팍나죠.

뉴욕에서는 헌터보내려고 — 이학교는 중학교고등학교를 같이 하는데 국민학교 5학년때 입학 시험봐서 결판을 내죠 — 한국 아줌마들이 과외를 엄청시키죠.

패어팩스에서도 제퍼슨 보내려고 — 이학교는 다행히 고등학교만 있죠 — 중학교때부터 난리도 아니라고 하더군요. 중학교 마칠 때쯤 시험을 봐서 800명을 추린 다음에 내신 및 면접, 추천서 등으로 400명을 추린다고 하더군요.

백인들도 이 학교 보내는 것에 눈에 불을켜죠. 어떤 백인 교수는 affirmative action때문에 히스패닉은 뽑히고 백인인 지 아들이 떨어졌다면서 — 실제로 맞아요 — affirmative action이 reverse discrimination이라고 법원에서 소송도 하고 있죠. 현재 400명 중에 백인 220-230, 아시안 160, 흑인 및 히스패닉 20-30 정도라고 하더군요.

문제는 비엔나, 패어옥스, 패어레익스, 센터빌과 같은 지역에서는 아시안 및 특히 히스패닉의 비율이 급격히 늘어나면서 공립학교의 질이 팍팍 떨어지기 시작하는 징후가 나타난다고 하더군요. 그렇다고 알링턴이나 랭리 같은 곳에서는 한국 사람들이 살 형편이 못되고.

일반 중고등학교에서는 한국에서 이민/유학온 학생들 중에 적응 못하는 애들이 이미 오래전부터 몰려다니면서 한국에서처럼 삥뜻고 때리고 하는 일이 벌어지고 있다고 하구요.

사람들은 자꾸만 공립학교를 피하려고 할 거고… 부모들은 그럴 수록 어떻게든 제퍼슨 보내려고 할 거고… 한국에서 과외하는 것만큼 잠 안재우면서 하지는 않을지 모르지만 사교육비 여기서라도 만만치 않을 걸요.
