Self publishing

    • brad 96.***.188.186

      Not Having Room To Breathe

There is a Korean word called “여유” [Yeo-yu]. It can be translated into “enough room” or “extra space”. If you have enough money, extra time or some buffer, that is 여유, too.

There are people always living without enough time, money or space. Did you know that “not having enough” of these can cause poverty as well? If you are always short of things, that can cause a chain of unfortunate events and you can be drowned into brokeness. On the contrary, when we have enough money, it brings us more money as well.

I am reading a Korean book titled “Let’s go to a better place” written by Jung. The author wrote that she actually got hit by a car and had a big accident years ago. She said she could not move for five months; An insurance agent of the offender came and suggested $20,000 initially for settlement right after the accident; she declined since she was not in condition to talk about money at that time; she was not able to move at all. The agent came a few times more and she learned that he suggested more and more money for the settlement as time passed. She said she had no idea how the settlement amount works at that time; she finally was able to walk a little bit five months after the accident, talked with the agent and accepted $50,000 for the final settlement. She said she got the money a day after she agreed to the amount.

This was her conclusion: If she did not have enough money saved at that time, she would have accepted $20,000 quickly in the beginning. For your information, medical expenses are not extremely high in Korea and probably $20,000 could have been still enough for her treatments. But, she realized that she was able to get $30,000 more only because she had enough savings and could delay the settlement talk a little bit.

This is happening all the time in our life. Some people lose more money since they do not have much. Some people make more money since they have some. This is how modern society works everywhere. For example, some poor people, also called the “Hidden Americans”, rent motel rooms by the week. For unstable financial reasons, they are usually not accepted by apartments. They usually end up paying way more than Apartment rent as a result.

Once you fall into a poverty swamp, it is hard to get out. It is important not to get into there via disconnecting all the poverty habits to begin with.
