I see a lot of debates online between US and Canada in terms of livability, number of jobs, economy, etc.

I want opinions from Koreans who have lived in both Canada and US. I am a Korean currently living in Canada with permanent resident card. I am writing in English because once I started Koreans, you know how it will ends. I think Korean is the best language for cursing and shit. English is the logical language stating fact in most cases with less emotion.

All these whites (Americans and Canadians) debate which country is better but I don’t give a crap. I think both countries are over-rated, hyped and they both not cracked-up to be. Everything is 1.5 – 2 time more expensive than Korea, and tax is killing. In US, medical billing is f*** ridiculous. You’re all gonna die if you get laid off from your job. In Canada, it’s so f*** cold and there are not many jobs so you are gonna die anyway.

I don’t plan on living Canada or US forever. When it’s time to retire, I’ll go back to my country. So I am sending all the money I made back home to purchase house or invest. (Savings in Korean banks is like 4 – 5 %,but in here, it’s like less than 1%,. it’s very sad). How these white idiots claim they are the FIRST in  the rank?

I work with white guys where there are no Koreans. I am not against white guys (oh, maybe I am a little bit). But I have never experienced any racism what so ever so far in my 10 or some years of life here in Canada.

but before all this ends, I want to work and live in US for few years. Just to see what’s it like. for now, I am mainly interested in Seattle because of no income tax, less black/mexicans, and the city’s calm characteristic, and less or no racism.

북남미(미국)에서 대학원부터해서 직장생활까지 하고 있는데 캐나다랑 많이 다를까 하는 생각이 드네요.

일반 직장생활하는데 ‘국가’라는 요소가 크게 작용하는 경우가 거의 없고, 특히나 기술쪽이면 더욱 더 그렇고.

가끔 미국 사람중에 ‘캐나다에 갔더니 사람들이 친절하더라’라고 말하는 걸 들은 적은 있습니다.

궁금한게 하나 있는데 캐나다에는 히스패닉, 흑인 들이 별로 없나요?

I am not sure what “typical Korean” means, but I guess you can help us answering your question by listing some of the requirements or preferences. For example, you may absolutely need to be around lots of Korean people or have access to large variety of Korean food, etc.

There can also be some conditions that are not strongly related to your ethnicity or cultural background, such as climate. Some may say the raining in Seattle makes them unbearably miserable while others don’t care too much. Likewise some love living in a big city while others dearly despise it.

Once you list your requirements, I am sure people will reply with useful contents.

And the last bit of advice: when you finally come over, please start saying “the” U.S instead of just U.S. Good luck with your transition!

참고로, 제 여동생이 보스톤에 살고 저는 삼촌들이 대부분 미국 거주 LA, 시카고 등 삽니다. 윗놈이 또 개소리로 캐나다 물가가 더 비싸다는데, 동생이 보스톤에서 토론토로 여행와서 하는 말이 토론토 물가가 보스톤보다 훨씬 싸다는 군요.
