아들이 운좋게 이번에 Caltech과 CMU computer science undergraduate에 합격했습니다. Programming은 어느 정도 하는 수준인것 같고 (python, java, shell script, etc), 지난 여름에 나름 유명한 start up에서 machine learning research intern으로 일한 경험도 있습니다. G모 사의 engineer와 함께 일해서 research paper도 publish하긴 했는데 앞으로 졸업하고도 계속 research를 할지, 아니면 software product를 개발하는 일을 하고 싶은지는 본인도 잘 모르는 것 같습니다. 지금 생각은 바로 취업하거나 start up 한다는데 학교를 다니면서 바뀔 수도 있겠죠.

Caltech은 Caltech이 갖고 있는 rigor와 명성이 있고 CMU는 CS에서 #1을 다투는 학교라 아들과 머리를 맞대고 비교/고민을 해 보고 있지만 정말 결정하기가 쉽지 않네요. 나름대로 정리를 해 보고는 있는데, 여기 계신분들의 조언이나 경험에 바탕을 둔 피드백 주시면 감사하겠습니다.

* Curriculum
– CMU: 다양한 track이 일찍부터 제공 (computer science, computational biology, artificial intelligence).
– Caltech: 처음 1년동안 math, physics, chemistry, biology가 필수이고 어렵다고 소문나있슴. CS는 Caltech에서 비교적 쉬운 전공으로 간주된다고 합니다.
– Question: 물론 CMU faculty가 200여명 되고 AI와 robotics에서 뛰어나지만, 한편으로는 undergrad에서 배우는 curriculum이 얼마나 차이가 날까 싶기도 합니다만. Caltech은 faculty가 20여명 되고 앞으로 5년동안 10명 정도 충원이 목표라고는 하는데…

* Readiness for jobs after graduation
– CMU의 경우 coding work load가 엄청나다고 들었는데 그만큼 준비가 더 잘 되어있을 것 같은데요.

* Student-to-faculty ratio & interaction with faculty

Q: 이 숫자는 모든 학과를 따졌을 때이고 CS만 따지면 좀 더 낮을 듯. CMU (13:1)는 얼마나 학생을 care해주는지 또 얼마나 교수와 interaction이 쉬운지 잘 모르겠습니다.

* Academic Mood
– 공통된 의견이 Caltech이 훨씬 collaborative하다고 (혼자서는 survive하기 힘들어서라는 이야기도 있음). CMU는 Caltech에 비하면 대량 방목형(?)이고 꽤 competitive하다는데 어떤지 잘 모르겠습니다.

* Location/weather
Winner = Caltech. 집과 Silicon Valley에서 가깝고 근처에 start-up이 많음.

* Social Life
CMU가 다양성 면에서 훨씬 낳은 것 같습니다. 그런데 Caltech을 방문해 보니 여기 오면 나쁜길로 빠지지는 않겠다라는 생각도 드네요. 워낙 학교가 작고 closed community라서.

* ???

정답은 없지만 피츠버그에서 썩느니 LA가 훨 좋다고 봅니다. CMU CS 와 로보틱스 유명한건 알지만, 대다수의 학생들이 캘리포니아로 몰리고 있고, 인턴 하나 잡기에도 칼텍 만큼훌륭한 학교 없지요. 저라면 고민도 없이 칼텍입니다.

CMU 가고 싶은 경우라면 아마 그 학교에 특정한 교수밑의 랩에 박사과정으로 가는 정도일뿐, 언더라면 솔직히 CMU 말고 UC 버클리나 UCLA 같은 탑레벨 주립대도 가겠으요.

둘 중 어딜 가도 좋으니, 아이가 알아보고 마음에 들어하는 곳으로 정하게 하세요. 그냥 던지는 말이 아닙니다. 저도 비슷한 상황인데, 결국 아이에게 맡겨야 합니다.

당연히 아이에게 맡겨야지요. 다만 제대로 판단할 수 있도록 올바른 정보와 perspective를 줬으면 하는 마음입니다.

총평: CS 전공이 확실하다면 학교 전체가 CS위주로 돌아가는 CMU
순수과학같은 전공을 두루두루 경험하고 싶다면 칼텍이요. 칼텍 CS는 솔직히 잘 몰라서 specific 한 comparison은 해드리기 어렵다는 점을 미리 알려드립니다.

아드님이 확실한 CS전공이라면 날고기는 컴돌이들 사이에서 부대끼며 너디한 학생 라이프를 즐기기엔 CMU가 짱입니다. 학교 전체가 공돌공돌 하고요. 소셜라이프라고 해봤자 전부 공돌이라 막 파티하고 그런 거 없습니다. 축제 때도 공돌이들이 로봇 가져와서 노느라 애쓴다 느낌. 나쁜길로 빠질일 없어요. 그런 분위기 전혀 아니고요.

커리큘럼은 진짜 잘 되어있다고 보시면 됩니다. 다른 여타 학교 커리큘럼보다 언제나 앞서 나갑니다. 커리큘럼 전문으로 연구하는 교수님들도 많아요. CS의 분야중에 CMU에서 시작된 분야가 한두개가 아닙니다.

졸업하고 인더스트리를 갈 준비는 확실합니다. 여기서만 살아남으면 밖에 나가서 일하면서 배우는 건 다 껌입니다. 학교에서는 “나는 바보야 ㅠㅠㅠ” 이런 애들도 전부 졸업하고 회사가면 날라다닙니다. 물론 개인적으로 봤을 때 인간을 만드는 곳이 아니라 working machine을 만드는 강하긴 해서 이렇게 까지 해야 하는 느낌도 들긴 합니다. 실리콘 밸리에서 멀다고 해도 큰 회사들 잡페어하면 전부 옵니다.

수업 보조 잘 되어있습니다. 어설프게 아는 박사생들은 core한 학부수업 조교조차 들어오지 못해요. 다 학부레벨에서 성적 잘 받은 애들이 철저하게 트레이팅 받아 들어옵니다. 그리고 교수님 extra help가면 당연히 교수님이 책 찾아가면서 일일히 다 응대 해 줍니다. 장학금을 얼마나 받으시는 지는 모르겠지만 여기 학생들은 매년 5만불씩 내고 다니는 고객님이에요. 어설프게 하면 난리납니다.

대학원을 가고 싶더라도 CMU좋아요. 학부레벨부터 연구 보조하기 좋습니다. 교수님들은 인더스트리 트랙 석사 프로그램으로 들어온 애들보다 학부로 들어온 애들을 더 선호하시는 편입니다. 본인이 원하면 2학년끝나고 여름부터는 여름 리서치 충분히 가능합니다. 다만 CMU 박사과정이 생각보다 빡세서 학부 나왔다는 이유로 모두 다 들어올 수 있는 건 아닌 것 같습니다만, 저희 랩 같은 경우 항상 한명씩 모교 출신 들이 들어오고 있습니다.

단점은 다른 전공들이 다양한 편이 아니고요. 그리고 몇몇 잘 되어있는 과에 학교의 리소스가 몰빵이 되어있는 느낌이긴 합니다. 따라서 CS 전공이 아니라면 특히 학부레벨에서 두루두루 좋은 학교에 가시는 것도 방법일 것 같습니다.
그리고 날씨 구린 건 어쩔 수 없고요. 도시긴 도시라 있을 건 다있긴 한데 애매합니다.

몇 가지 궁금한 점이 있습니다.
* CS에서 학부생으로서 느끼는 분위기 – collaborative vs competitive – 는 어떤가요?
* 또 curriculum이 잘 되어있다고 하는데, 학부 레벨에서 배우는 내용이 다른 학교와 많이 차이가 나는지요? 다른 학교와 직접 비교는 어렵겠지만 학생들끼리 이러 저러한 비교를 하지는 않았나요?

학부/대학원을 모두 다니셨다니 조언이 많은 도움이 될 것 같네요.

> Collaborative vs Competitive:

일단은 저학년 수업들은 개인과제긴 한데요. 고학년 400레벨수업은 대부분 파트너 한명과 같이 하는 편이긴 합니다. 파트너 이상으로 같이하는 과목들은 CS내부에서는 없는 편이라서 collaborative하다고 보긴 좀 그럴 수 있습니다. 다만 다른 학생하고 경쟁하는 느낌은 아니고요 자기와의 싸움 느낌에 가까운듯 합니다. 가끔 숙제 제출시스템에 게임 처럼 랭킹 해놓는 경우도 있긴 합니다만 어차피 일정수준 이상이면 만점 받습니다.

다만 워낙에 잘하는 아이들이 많다보니 조금 주늑드는 건 있을 수 있습니다. 대부분의 과목이 일단은 절대평가로 시작하는데요. 다들 점수가 안나오면 학생들에게 도움이 되는 방향으로 상대평가로 전환되거든요 (90점이 A기준이지만 평균이 70이면 80점으로 낮추는 등). 이 경우 피어들보다 어느정도 이상은 잘 해야 하기 때문에 스트레스 받을 수도 있긴 합니다. 성적이 +/-가 없어서 삐끗하면 B 받고 A받으려면 좀 많이 고생하기도 합니다.

말씀하신대로 직접 비교는 어렵습니다만 대학원으로 들어오는 사람들 얘기를 보면 다른 학교 대비 과제같은게 어렵고 양이 많은 편인 것 같습니다. Intro to Systems 수업 같은 경우 워낙에 유명해서 다른 학교로 책이 팔려나가서 강의가 되고 있는 것으로 알고 있고요 (http://csapp.cs.cmu.edu/3e/adoptions.html). OS는 그냥 스펙이랑 에뮬레이터만 주고 짜렴이라고 하는 것으로 악명이 높습니다. 그리고 아무래도 School of Computer Science로 아예 공과대나 이과대 소속이 아니라 분리되어 있어서 그런가 1학년부터 전공과목을 빠르게 시작하는 것으로 유명합니다.

최신 트렌드는 다른 학교들 보다는 잘 따라가고 있다고 생각합니다. 커리큘럼 업데이트도 자주 있는 편인 것 같고요. 예를들면 얼마전부터 intro language class는 c/python/ functional language 수업 세가지가 모두 의무가 되었고요. 멀티코어 환경에 맞춰 자료구조/알고리즘 수업에 parallel algorithm위주로 재구성 되기도 있어요.

우와 가고 싶다.

학부는 공대라도 무조건 랭킹입니다. CMU가 좋다는 것도 다 대학원 이야기입니다… 차라리 학부는 칼텍 컴싸를 하고 석사를 CMU에서 하는 것이 나아보입니다.

CMU SCS 는 MIT 와 같은 레벨로 입학이 어렵기로 유명하죠. Caltech 도 비슷하지만. 학교가 너무 작아요.

위에분 학부 랭킹 하는데. 그건 한국 사람들이 하는 얘기에요. 미국 사람들한테 물어보세요, 학과 랭킹 보고 갑니다. 예를 들어, 누가 예일대 공대 가나요.

헐 CS만 놓고보면 칼텍이 CMU랑 비교되는군요. 칼텍 학부생들은 NASA JPL에서 학기중이나 방학 때 인턴할 수 있는 기회도 많고 수학이나 물리, 다른 분야도 엄청 열심히 공부하면서 CS는 기본으로 다 잘합니다. 칼텍같은 world class 학교가 CS 전공에 한정되긴 하지만 CMU랑 비교되는 게 좀 웃겼어요. 정말 여기 게시판 분들은 CS에 심하게 biases 되신 듯 ㅎㅎㅎ

CMU 한표. 더군다나 CS면 MIT랑 비교되는데….피츠버그 심심하다고들 하지만 각 잡고 공부하기엔 정말 좋은 도시입니다.

칼텍은 라이벌이 mit 인 학교입니다. 단지 한국사람들 사이에서 칼텍을 mit 만큼 잘몰라 이러는거 같은데 님의 질문은 ‘mit와 cmu cs 학부중에서 어디를 가야할까요?’ 라고 물어보는것과 같습니다

현재 여기 사람들이 다 가고 싶어하는 테크회사 개발자로 재직중이고요 저도 미국학부 나왔고 (뿐만 아니라 미국서 초등학교까지 나옴) 당연 cmu cs 의 명성은 익히 알지만 아… 저라면 칼텍 보냅니다

칼택이 최고의대학인거 누가모르나. 모든랭킹 학부 대학원 포함 칼택이라할지라도. Cs만큼은 카네기멜론이다.

이건 솔직히 고민 1도 안하고 칼텍이죠. 대학원이면 칼텍과 CMU CS 고민할까말까지만…

아들이 어떤 식으로 공부했는지 도 좀 써주시면 자녀 가진 분들에게 도움이 많이 될꺼같네요.

고등학교때 어떻게 공부하고 시험은 어떻게 대비 등등…

이 분 아드님 보다 더 좋은 “점수 스팩”으로도 줄줄이 떨어집니다. 그걸 알아서 크게 도움될건 없습니다. GPA와 시험 점수는 어떤 심오한 트릭이 있는 것도 아니고요. 좋은 학교 가려면 최고 GPA/점수는 그냥 기본입니다. 좋은 학교들은 지원자들을 시험 점수 순서대로 줄세우면 4.0에 거의 만점인 지원자들로도 입학 정원 채우고 몇 배로 넘칩니다.

헐… 이거 좀 심하군요. 아무리 요즘에 CS hype이 심하다 해도,
CMU CS 와 Caltech 을 비교 하시는군요.

Caltech 학부 들어갈 실력이면 MIT 들어갈 실력인데, 왜 MIT를 안썼는지 궁금하긴 하군요.

학부는 위에 어떤분이 말씀 하셨지만, 전공 랭킹 따지는게 아니에요.
그 전공 랭킹이라는게 별게 없기 때문이죠.

무조건 Caltech 입니다.
학부생한테 캘택만큼 좋은 기회를 제공하는 학교는 전세계에 없습니다.

MIT 하고 캘택을 비교를 해도 소수정예인 캘택을 선호하는데, CMU CS 는 좀 아니지요.
대학원이라면 전공에 따라서 특히 CS라면 CMU를 가겠지만,

언더라면 무조건 캘택입니다.

세상은 변하고 이를 움직이는 주인공도 바뀝니다. CMU는 지금 급변하는 시대에 가장 잘 맞게 준비된 학교입니다. 다른 학교들은 이제 와서 허둥대며 급격한 변화에 적응하려 하지만 이 학교는 SCS가 중심이 되어 수십년전부터 이런 변화를 앞장서 이끌어 왔습니다. 인간의 이성에 대한 과학적 탐구 과정에서 CS와 AI와 같은 현대과학을 탄생시키는데 크게 기여하고 이런 업적으로 튜링상에 노벨경제학상까지 수상한 Herbert Simon에 대해서 조사해보면 이 학교가 어떻게 현재의 위치에 있는지 이해하는데 도움이 될겁니다.

당연히 칼텍 보내야죠.
칼텍에서 컴사하면 그냥 앞길이 창창 하다 보심 됩니다.
컴사 랭킹이 몇이고 그런 설명할 필요도 없고
칼텍 졸업생이란 걸로 모든게 설명되죠.
천재 스타일 애들이 수두룩하지만 아이들이 서로 잘난척도 않고 도와가며,
학교도 학생들 엄청 케어하고 동문들 학교에 대한 애정도 대단합니다.
포브스가 몇일전 발표한 졸업후 동문들 학교 기부금 순위에 1위가 칼텍으로 2위 스탠, 3위 MIT와 더불어
기부금 금액이 어마어마 하더군요.
저 3학교가 초봉 연봉 순위도 거의 탑5안에 다 드는 걸로 압니다.
그만큼 취업도 잘되고 저만큼 기부할만큼 돈도 잘벌고 학교 사랑도 대단하다는 방증.
밑에 자료에서 칼텍 포함 세학교와 카네기 인당 기부금액 한번 찾아보시죠.
결론은 컴사과목은 물론 학부의 우수성과 명성은 상대가 안된다입니다.
그리고 칼텍은 기업에서 일년에 서너번 인턴 찾으로 오고 학교자체로 surf라고 여름에 인턴기회를 제공해서
원하면 인턴하는건 일도 아니고, 컴사를 취업개념을 넘어 깊이있게 공부하기 정말 좋은 곳입니다.
그리고 컴사 아이들 중에 취업보다 창업에 관심있는 아이들이 많아서 뜻이 비슷한 애들끼리 학교에서부터
이런 저런 작업하는 애들도 많아요. 다들 똑똑한 애들이라 꼭 컴사하는 애들끼리만 아니라
여러 전공 크로스오버로 작업해보고 그러더라구요.
