내 평생 집에서 개를 키운 적은 단 한 번뿐이다. 중학생이던 어느 날, 학교에서 돌아오니 어머니가 아주 작은 강아지 한 마리를 품에 안고 계셨다. 세상에 나온 지 얼마 되지 않은 듯, 젖을 막 뗀 것처럼 작고 여린 생명이었다. 어머니는 마치 나에게 건네듯 두 팔을 살짝 들어 보이셨다. 그 강아지는 도사견, 그것도 암컷이었다. 힘과 투지로 유명한 종. 다 자라면 무섭기까지 한데, 그때의 그 강아지는 그저 따뜻하고 부드러운 털뭉치였다. 나도 결국 그 아이를 안아 들었다. 거부할 수가 없었다.

그 시절 우리 가족은 남의 집 한 칸을 빌려 모두 함께 살았다. 개를 키울 공간 따위는 없었다. 그래서 우리는 달걀가게 안에 작은 개집을 만들어 그곳에서 키우기 시작했다. 이름은 라피. 온 가족이 돌아가며 안아 주고 쓰다듬고 정을 쏟아부으니, 그 작은 생명은 놀라울 만큼 빠르게 자랐다. 금세 몸집이 커져 가게가 더 좁아 보일 정도였다. 그런데도, 아마도 그곳밖에 몰라서였을까, 라피는 잘 적응했다. 말썽 한 번 없이 조용히 지냈고, 그 순한 체념 같은 태도는 우리에게 더 큰 애정을 불러일으켰다.

낮에는 가끔 라피를 풀어주곤 했는데, 그러면 라피는 혼자서 시장통을 돌아다니며 떠돌이 개들과 어울려 뛰놀다가 지치면 다시 돌아왔다. 그때는 몰랐다. 그렇게 큰 개—하물며 도사견을—목줄도 없이 사람들로 붐비는 시장에 풀어놓는 일이 얼마나 위험한지. 암컷이라서였는지, 타고난 성정이 착해서였는지, 라피는 단 한 번도 사람이나 다른 개를 문 적이 없었다. 하지만 지금 생각하면 가슴이 철렁할 일이다. 그런 일을 우리는 아무렇지 않게 매일 반복했다.

일요일, 학교에 가지 않는 날이면 나는 가끔 자전거에 라피의 목줄을 묶고 남산공원까지 함께 달렸다. 라피는 그 시간을 아이처럼 좋아했다. 자주 데려갈 수는 없었고, 지금 미국에서 사람들이 거의 매일 개를 산책시키는 모습을 보며 뒤늦은 죄책감이 밀려온다. 동시에, 이곳의 개들은 참 호사스럽게 사는구나 하는 생각도 든다.

얼마 지나지 않아 라피는 첫 새끼를 낳았다. 다섯 마리쯤 되었던 것 같다. 새끼들은 하나둘씩 팔려 나갔다. 도사견이 인기였던 덕에 값도 좋았고, 그 돈은 내 학비에 보탬이 되었다. 이후로도 두 번 더 새끼를 낳았고, 결국 라피 자신도 팔려갔다. 부모님의 달걀 장사가 커지면서 가게 안에 더 많은 공간이 필요해졌기 때문이다. 라피와 개집은 더 이상 둘 자리가 없었다.

새 주인이 와서 라피의 목줄을 잡고 데려가려 할 때, 라피는 우리가 있는 쪽을—자신이 평생 알고 지낸 단 하나의 가족을—뒤돌아보았다. 너무도 슬프고, 너무도 어리둥절한 표정이었다. 그 순간, 우리 모두의 가슴이 조여들었다. 지금도 그 장면은 기억 속 깊은 곳에 무겁게 남아 있다.

라피를 보낸 뒤로 나는 다시는 개를 키우지 않았다. 삶이 허락하지도 않았고, 미국에서 몇 번 좋지 않은 경험을 겪고 나니 남아 있던 애정도 자연스레 사라졌다. 결국 라피—희미하고 흐릿하게, 가끔 기억의 가장자리에서 떠오르는—그 아이가 내 인생의 유일한 개로 남았다.

그리고 정말, 내 하나뿐인 아들이 아내와 나에게 좀처럼 연락을 주지 않는 지금, 아득하고 닿을 수 없는 과거에 키웠던 개의 기억을 되짚는 일이 무슨 의미가 있을까 하는 생각이 들기도 한다.
그런데도, 조용한 순간에는 문득 이런 생각이 스친다. 사람과 개 사이의 단순한 유대가, 부모와 아들 사이에 남아 있는 것보다 더 단단하게 느껴질 때가 있다고.

<strong>The Only Dog I Ever Raised</strong>

In my whole life, I raised a dog at home only once, back when I was in middle school. One afternoon I came home from school and found my mother holding a tiny puppy in her arms — so small, so new to the world, it looked as if it had only just stopped nursing. She lifted her arms slightly, as if offering the little thing to me. It was a female Tosa, a breed known for its strength and its fighting spirit. They grow into fearsome creatures, but as a puppy she was nothing but softness and warmth. I held her too, unable to resist.

At the time, our entire family lived together in a single rented room in someone else’s house. There was no space for a dog. So we built a small doghouse inside our egg shop and raised her there. We named her Rafi. With all of us taking turns to hold her, stroke her, and pour affection into her, that tiny creature grew astonishingly fast. Before long she was huge, and the shop felt even smaller than before. Yet somehow, maybe because she had known nothing else, Rafi adapted. She lived quietly, without causing trouble, and her gentle acceptance made her all the more precious to us.

Sometimes during the day we would let her out, and she would trot off on her own, mingling with the stray dogs that roamed the marketplace, running and playing until she tired herself out and returned. Back then, I had no idea how dangerous it was to let such a large dog — and a Tosa at that — wander freely through a crowded market without a leash. Maybe because she was female, maybe because she simply had a kind heart, she never once bit anyone or caused harm. But thinking about it now, it was the sort of thing that could make one’s chest tighten. And we did it every day without a second thought.

On Sundays, when I didn’t have school, I would sometimes tie her leash to my bicycle and run with her all the way to Namsan Park. Rafi loved those outings with a joy that was almost childlike. I couldn’t take her often, and now, living in America where people walk their dogs nearly every day, I feel a deep, late-arriving guilt. At the same time, I can’t help thinking that dogs here live lives of extraordinary comfort.

Not long after, Rafi had her first litter. I remember about five puppies. They were sold off one by one. Because Tosas were popular, the puppies fetched a good price, and the money helped pay my school expenses. She had two more litters after that, and eventually Rafi herself was sold. My parents’ egg business had grown, and they needed more space in the shop to store eggs. Rafi and her doghouse had to go.  
When the new owner came and led her away by the leash, Rafi turned back toward us — toward the only family she had ever known — with an expression so sad, so bewildered, that all of our hearts clenched. Even now, that moment sits heavy in my memory.

After sending Rafi away, I never raised another dog. Life never gave me the room for it, and after a few unpleasant encounters with dogs in America, whatever affection I once had simply faded. In the end, Rafi — faint, blurred, rising only occasionally from the far edges of memory — remains the only dog of my life.

And really, when my one and only son so rarely reaches out to my wife and me, it becomes hard to find any meaning in revisiting the memories of a dog I raised in a distant, unreachable past.

And yet, in the quieter moments, I sometimes catch myself thinking that the simple bond between a person and a dog can feel steadier than whatever remains between parents and a son.
