5월 21일 휴거를 믿고 자신과 자신의 자식의 목에 칼을 댄 여성이 우연히 방문한 친구가 신고한 덕분에 목숨을 건졌습니다.(아이들도 무사함)

아무리 극소수의 원래 미친사람이었다고 해도, 자기 자식의 목에 칼을 댈 수 있게끔 하는 강한 신념을 유발하는 이데올로기가 종교 말고 또 있을까 하는 생각이 드네요.  
자식들은 천만다행으로 살아나서 아버지와 친지들의 보호를 받고 있다고 하지만 그 정신적 충격이 얼마나 컸을까요. 

어린시절 주일학교에서 아브라함의 자식 봉양을 (하느님의 just kidding이었지만) 미덕으로 배웠던 생각이 납니다.

자기 자식의 목에 칼을 댈 수 있는 광신자도 가끔 있지만

반면 생면부지의 사람을 위해 목숨을 바치는 종교인도 있지.

그저 어디 건덕지가 있을 것 같으면 종교하고 연관을 지으려 하고,

그것도 언제나 종교를 이야기하면서 실제로는 언제나 기독교를 이야기하고

논리도 맞지 않고

종교는 생각하면 생각할 수록 무시무시한거 같아요.

종교때문이라면, 수 많은 사람들을 죽이고도 떳떳하거나 오히려 자랑스럽게 생각하는 멍청이들이 있잖아요.. 차라리 자기가죽는건 그나마 나은 정도..

종교만이 아니죠. 정치도 마찬가지고..
사람의 생각이란것이 한번 어느쪽으로 강한 믿음이 생기면, 그게 정말 객관적으로 옳은지 그른지 판단을 할 수 없게되는거 같습니다. 무조건 자신이 생각하는것이 옳다고 생각하거든요.

저 꼴통버스터인가 하는 인간은 tracer 님이 글쓰는 것을 의도적으로 방해하려는 거 같이 보이네요.

항상 자신의 주장이 100% 옳다고 철썩같이 믿는 멍청이들이, 다른 사람의 글이나 주장에대해 쌍욕으로 반응하죠.

종교나 정치가 위험한것이, 그들의 주장을 100% 옳다고 믿는 멍청이들을 양산해내기 때문이죠.

이런 엽기 선정적인 기사 찾아서, 종교 비판을 유도하지 맙시다.

@tracer: can I ask what else do we have in “ideology” category other than religion? I could think of communism, but if i remember correctly, you said communism also has religious aspect, and I feel that your comment is just targeted for religion.

말씀하신대로 종교, 공산주의, 자본주의, 신자유주의, libertarianism, socialism등등의 수많은 이데올로기와 그에 대한 확고한 신념을 가지고 있는 사람들이 많지만 자식의 목에 칼을 들이댈 만큼 강한 신념을 주는 이데올로기가 종교 말고 또 있을까하는 궁금증이 들었습니다. 물론 시대적 상황과 경우에 따라 가족보다 국가를 먼저 생각하는 경우도 있습니다만,원글과 같은 직접적이고 끔찍한 광적 행동을 유도하는 경우는 종교의 예가 많지 않나 생각합니다.

제가 공산주의 이념 자체에 종교적 측면이 있다고 생각하기 보다는 김일성/김정일이나 스탈린 치하의 특정 사회에서 그 이념이 종교와 비슷한 현상을 보여주는 점들이 많다는 생각입니다. 모든 이념은 맹목적이 되면 모두 종교적인 측면을 보일 수 있다고 생각합니다. 종교라는 이념은 본질적으로 맹목을 요구하는 것이구요.

술을 먹고 자동차를 몰다 사고가 났을 경우… 위험한 것은 자동차인가요 아니면 술을 먹고 자동차를 운전하는 행위일까요?

종교를 믿는 모든 사람이 자식의 목에 칼을 대는 것은 아니고 종교 말씀에 그렇게 하도록 가르치지도 않습니다. 따라서 위의 사안을 전체 종교로 확대 해석하는 것은 무리라고 생각합니다.

I doubt this is true. I agree it does often/sometimes to various extent, but I feel you define religion as such, and then, your conclusion seems pretty straightforward, of course – “only blind faith can push people to kill even their own children.”

Back to your example, “killing their own children” – this is very very rare in religion – probably less than a few in a million. That Abraham’s story is famous is because it is very very rare. You might say it’s still less rare than in other ideologies, but the sample is so small, and I’d say there’s no statistical significance we can generalize from.

I think the word “evidence” is tricky here. What do you mean by “evidence”? Are these only the things that are backed by scientific experiments? What about statistical analysis, does this qualify for the evidence?

If you mean “scientific proof,” no practical ideology is based on evidence, because it just spans too many things, and it’s just impossible to prove those things. Take any ideology, socialism, communism, or anything. They can argue with some evidences, but it’s far from the proof.

I don’t think it’s practically different for religion. Most of religiousteachings are backed by individual testimony which can be statistically meaningful in many cases. There are little people who goto church or temple and just believe what the priests say. They follow small things first, and give credibility step by step.

At certain point, this can lead to a complete failure like the rapture happening, but most people with moderate judgement can tell this is blind. I agree that faith is very important in religion, but most of them are tested in one way or the other.

제가 말하는 evidence는 objective하고 demonstrable한 public revelation이 가능한 근거를 말합니다. subjective하고 personal revelation이 아니고 말입니다. 물론 mathmatical한 proof를 말하는 것도 아닙니다. 말씀하신 과학에서도 proof라는 것은 사실 존재하기 어렵습니다. objective evidence 를 말하는 것이지요.

하지만 종교는 객관적인 근거에 기반하지 않습니다. 그렇기 때문에 수많은 종교가 존재하고 한 종교에도 수많은 종파가 존재하는 것이고 누가 누구를 이단이라고 할 수 없는 이유이지요. 헌데 종교는 그 객관적 근거를 무시하는 신념(faith)를 미덕시하는 것이 우습지요.

대부분의 moderate 신자들은 이번 휴거 해프닝을 맹목적이라고 보신다고 했는데, 하지만 그 사람들이 이번 휴거 광신자들과 다른 점은 날짜를 지정안했다는 것 뿐입니다. 믿음 자체는 황당하긴 마찬가지이지요.

그리고, 대부분 moderate신자들은 광신과 ‘moderate belief’를 구분할 수 있다고 하셨는데, 그 중도성향의 신자들의 광신에 대한 판단 근거가 어디서 온 것일까요? 불과 백년 전의 moderate신자들과 지금의 moderate신자들을 비교해보면 그 세계관과 가치관은 천지차이이지요. 그 변화가 종교 내에서 스스로 나온 것일까요? 아니면 종교 바깥의 과학의 발전과 계몽운동의 결과일까요?

Sorry for being late to respond. I’m having pretty busy days recently, and I wrote pretty long response yesterday around noon, but when i press reply it just went away with some error message, and I’m finding it hard to make that time again.

I’ll try to make it short.
I understand some Bible verses value “faith,” but it’s practically impossible to measure one’s faith because it’s invisible, and the only thing we can see is the actions of the people, emanating from the faith. Jesus also said you should see the fruit to know the tree is good or bad. I’d have the same stance. If some faith repeatedly mislead people to wrong action, that faith would be bad. But if one pushes people to better behavior, people just agree to accept that, and it has applied to most of our political/law system.

If you believe in rapture and kill your children, that’s badly misled. For most people, I believe, faith in “someday” rapture, or end of the world, help them to live better, do better things. I question you that on what objectionable evidence you could argue there would be no rapture or end of the world “some day” in the future.

Changes in religion. Yes it changes with more knowledges, and I think that’s a good thing. Why is this a problem? Every other ideas/values change with time unlessit’s a material phenomenon.

then again, on what standard can you distinguish right action from wrong action? is it from scripture(which requires faith to believe in) or secular morality we human developed throughout the ages? in my opinion, to distinguish good fruits from bad fruits, it always require more than religious mindset, and as amatter of fact, it is the faith(believing by fiat) itself that causes bad fruits.

so you’re saying believing in “someday rapture” is a good faith and “specific day rapture” is a bad faith?

i also think progressive change in religious doctrines is good thing, but my point was the change was forced to happen by people’s enlightenment not because volunteer change within religion. what i’m saying is that the fact that moderate believers can distinguish from bad faith and good faith is because of secular enlightenment. 100 years ago, there were much more bad faith than nowadays and it was taken for granted by moderate believers.

I don’t think there’s any absolute measure that we can use to determine a specific action is good or bad. God knows (you would say if such exists), but we humans do not know what he’s thinking completely.

Having said that I would say most people can tell a specific action is good or bad in everyday lives, and I would say about 80% (number doesn’t tell much here though) would be same for either religious or not, or among religions. About 20%, I would say, no one has “objective” answer, and we have to stay with the inconsistency.

Faith can result in a bad behavior, but it’s not just a matter religion. Any ideology has that problem. In general religion has a stronger effect, so it can result in an extreme damage, but at the same time, it could result in some of the saints.

By “someday rapture”, I actually meant the concept of “reward for good people and punishment for bad people in the end”, not necessarily human body ascending to heaven. I think this is already in a way basis of our law system.

The reason I believe “specific day rapture” is bad is that it has been wrong every time so far, and history has shown the side effects. Do you have any “objective” side effect for “some day rapture”?

I wouldn’t deny that some religious problems has been cured by secular enlightenment. When system goes wrong, sometimes it’s hard to find the answer inside the system, and needs external cause. But I’m pretty sure that many people with religious faith also have contributed to the “secular” enlightenment.

i agree with your last posting.

my point is, as you mentioned, in general religious ideology has a stronger effect resulting rare but extreme damage, so we need to keep criticize those aspect of religion. unfortunately, in my opinion, thet negative aspect of religion is also a heart of the religious mindset too.(which is faith)

i quoted this many times but again, “good people do good things and bad people do bad things, but to make good people to do evil things, it takes religion.”
