The IRS has determined that taxpayers who filed 2022 federal income taxes before February 10, 2023 and reported certain state 2022 tax refunds as taxable income should consider filing a Form 1040-X amended tax return. The IRS has provided a State Payments chart listing individual states and associated payment programs that are affected by this decision. The IRS will not challenge the taxability of state payments related to general welfare and disaster relief. See IRS News Release IR-2023-77 for complete details.
