This position also partners extensively with BE’s Data Analytics and Governance Organization to build the Bid Data initiative, the Internet of Things and eventually revenue generating products and services. Position also aligns with the Enterprise Master Data Team and partners with other BU teams. Owns the JCI Big Data space which is expanding to other BUs. The position requires an individual capable of visualizing a broad view of enterprise systems and infrastructures and one who keeps up with the rapidly evolving technology landscape through venture capitalist and IT industry. The individual will lead a team of resources that will that support active development teams.Responsibilities include:
- Lead a team responsible for implementing data warehouse solutions ensuring high data quality and availability across the organization
- Incorporate BI strategies and tools into the overall data warehouse solution with an eye towards user self-service and ease of use
- Develop and Lead a team responsible for implementing Big Data in partnership with BE’s Data Analytics (Data Scientist) and Governance organization and scaling to meet the needs of other JCI BUs. Big Data initiatives span both internal and external data including connected products and the Internet of Things. Potential to develop revenue generating products and services in the $100 of millions.
- Research trends and latest technologies through venture capitalist and IT Industry and incorporate into BE/JCI. Critical for capitalizing on the Internet of Things and Big Data
- Drives both traditional and cloud based data/meta data technologies, understanding the difference and leveraging the cloud where appropriate to transform areas of responsibility
- Process control and improvement of all database/data architectures with the eventual goal to understand and align with the Enterprise Data Team in the future
- Responsible for the development, architectural guidance, and support of BE’s collaboration tools, i.e. Sharepoint
- Facilitate the successful use of appropriate technologies to meet the business needs for integration, reporting and analytic purposes.
1. Business and Industry Leadership- Actively engaged in Industry to keep up with rapidly evolving trends in the big data, internet of things, DW and BI space
- Understand JCI Business Drivers, Strategy, and Objectives – to have a strong grasp of JCI strategic guidance to ensure that interactions with internal customers are consistent with those directives.

2. Development- Maintain the cross-application/ platform data and distribution standards (publish, consume, governance), and tuning strategies
- Lead the development and implementation of various strategic data architecture initiatives around Data Architecture Policies, Standards, Governance, Privacy and Metadata Management.
- Align with the Enterprise Data Team around implementation and documentation of the enhanced data architecture meeting the needs of all the functional business areas; maintain this architecture (including maintenance of the persistence layer – i.e., operational data stores, reporting warehouses, metadata management, etc.) as needed.
- Determine the effectiveness of existing technologies and processes in relation to the data architecture design, create necessary implementation/migration plans, and recommend new solutions as required.
- Serve as central ‘source of truth’ regarding data definitions at data element and entity levels for the Business Unit within the JCI Enterprise Data Model. This covers physical and logical data models, as well as in the reporting object and business glossary levels.
- A key objective will be to design and implement processes and technology to vastly improve the speed and efficiency by which data is secured and made usable.
- Accountable for BU-specific data architecture design and review processes, including planning with the Enterprise Data Team and monitoring efforts, reviewing deliverables and communicating to management.
- Establishes, communicates, and implements departmental plans, objectives, and strategies.
- Design the overall information architecture across multiple data types and across multiple platform types (operational, analytical, reporting) balancing the need for access against security, analytics and performance requirements.
- Develop a governance model that provides structure for appropriate usage of collaborative tools.
- Develop access permissions to provide user security to web sites and pages.
- Keep up to date with related collaborative technologies through training, product research and participating in conferences and user groups.
3. Compliance- Enforce Data Modeling Rules and Definitions – to formulate and execute activities to determine compliance with data modeling rules and definitions, and to rectify non-compliance.
- Develop scalable security for both BI and Big Data, keeping in mind the broader picture of JCI
4. Staffing- Develop Staffing Plan – to specify the number and timeline of personnel required for ongoing data architecture management.
- Build a Big Data IT team in alignment and partnership with Data Analytics (Data Scientist) and Governance Organization
- Develop Job Descriptions for Team Personnel – to specify the responsibilities and attributes of Enterprise Data Architect.
- Acquire Personnel – to interview and hire/contract those individuals to be part of the Data Management & Collaboration team.
- Develop Training Standards – to document the required skills and knowledge levels that must be achieved and maintained by data management personnel.
- Staff and Deliver Data Management Team Services – to plan and oversee the assignment of team personnel to projects.
- Develop Personnel Skills & Knowledge – to evaluate personnel, develop a plan, and execute activities to add or enhance the capabilities of team personnel.
- Creates an effective work environment by developing a common vision, setting clear objectives, expecting teamwork, recognizing outstanding performance, and maintaining open communications.
5. Support and partnering- Manage the relationship with the Enterprise Data Team with respect to the maintenance of the BU components of the Enterprise Data Model.
- Work with data management professionals and the business to ensure consistency in data usage across systems and tools. This will include data governance, data quality, data integration and business intelligence personnel.
- Collaborate with other business unit and Enterprise data management functions to ensure best practices are communicated and followed.
- Responsible for influencing the organization and making decisions across the business unit related to data.
- Partner with end users to understand their needs and engage with the data provider community and IT to deliver on those needs.
- Participates as a member of the IT Management Team.
- Maintain the platform architecture surrounding the data management and collaboration organization and functions as needed.
6. Administration- Manages direct reports, systems, and projects to achieve department/unit goals in accordance with department and organization policies and practices.
- Prepares and analyzes department/team plans and reports.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in IT or Data related field
- 10 years of experience in data architecture, data design, data modeling and solutions development
- Proven background of designing and implementing data solutions which solve strategic and tactical business needs including DW, BI and Big Data in both the back office and connected products/internet of things
- Experience in both traditional and cloud based data technologies/meta data technologies, understanding the difference and leveraging the cloud to transform areas of responsibility
- Strong background working with semi-structured and/or unstructured data and data repositories used for data mining and innovation analysis
- Strong background in collaborative tools, i.e. Sharepoint
- Strong business acumen
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and team management skills
- Strong technical understanding of data modeling, design and architecture principles and techniques across master data, transaction data and derived/analytic data; strong technical expertise in data storage/management technologies for both OLTP and DW solutions.
- Strong familiarity with data management tools, including enterprise repository tools, data modeling tools, data quality tools, data mapping tools, and data profiling tools
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to balance data theory with practical solutions
- Background in creating subject-area data marts and performance monitoring systems
- Understanding of data modeling methods, including relational and dimensional (star schema) methods
