The biggest hit in tech layoffs are not those laid off, but the new Computer Science CS grads not getting their first job. After the dot com bust I saw CS graduates taking unskilled jobs like at grocery stores. Our CS program shrunk over a few years from 200 CS majors per year to 50. But all those who started CS degrees during the dot com boom faced a gloomy job market for years. When things lighted up after several years, they had a harder time getting a job matching their skills, compared to a fresh graduate, when they had Safeway cashier on their resume. Those who are fired, have experience, and will be the first hired for new job opportunities, or may do their own start-ups. It’s all the students in the now swelled CS and AI programs that will suffer if the tech downturn becomes deep. To those who enter university for tech / STEM, choose a broad education, not depending on a single industry.
