이번에 취업 비자로 집사람과 함께 미국으로 돌아온 캘리포니아 초짜 거주자 입니다. 캘리포니아 면허증 취득과 관련해서 한가지 여쭤볼 사항이 있어 들렀습니다.제 처가 미국 도착한 이후에 드라이빙 라이센스 취득을위해 DMV에서 필기를 보았습니다. 필기 패스한 이후에 담당직원이 혹시 한국 운전 면허증 있냐고 물어보더군요. 그래서 한국 운전 면허증 제시 했더니 learner’s permit이 아니라 temporary driver license를 한국 면허증 복사본과 같이 붙여서 주더라고요. temporary driver license가 만료 될때까지 운전 할 수 있다면서요.
DMV 웹사이트에서 찾아보니 아래와 같은 내용을 찾을 수 있었는데…
도무지 이해가 잘 가질 않네요. 그냥 60일 이상 미국에서 살고 있다라는 증명을 하면 드라이빙 테스트 없이 면허증이 나온다는 것인지… 또한 a BD/LP valid를 제출하라고 하는데… 어디에 무엇을 제출해야 되는지에 대한 내용은 전혀 언급이 되어 있질 않아 답답하네요. 고수님들 좀 도와주세요.Non-Citizens

How to Apply as a Non-Citizen
Have ready your birthdate/legal presence* (BD/LP) document and your Social Security number.
Follow the procedure for obtaining a Class C license; normal application fees and testing requirements apply
Once you pass the test the DMV will mail you your license or ID after the Department of Homeland Security verifies your legal status.
*When entering the country with a valid passport or travel document, you are issued a BD/LP. This document indicates how long you are permitted to stay in the U.S. You can begin the process of getting your California license if your BD/LP is good for at least 30 days, but if it expires in less than 60 days, you won’t get your license or ID until you provide a BD/LP valid for 60 days or more.If your BD/LP expires in less than five years from your application date (six years for an ID card), your license will be limited term.
If your BD/LP expires in more than five years from your application date (again, six years for your ID card), your license will be full term.
NOTE: Non-citizens can obtain a Social Security number by submitting an application to the Social Security Administration in person along with documents proving immigration status, work eligibility, age, and identity. The SSA has an automated phone system at (800) 772-1213 that can answer most inquiries.
