하루에도 몇 건 씩 올라오는 증명서 번역에 대한 질문 글에 관성적으로 달리는 공증하라는 댓글들을 보면서 그동안 수도 없이 공증까지 받을 필요는 없다는 댓글을 그 밑에다 달아 왔습니다. 똑같은 댓글을 남기길 대여섯 차례 넘게 하다보니 이게 뭐하는 짓인가 하는 회의도 들었지만 그래도 막상 공증하라는 댓글을 보게 되면 또 습관처럼 공증 필요없다는 댓글을 남기게 됩니다. 근데 이제는 그만하고 싶은 생각이 들어서 마지막으로 댓글이 아니라 이렇게 본글을 하나 세워 두려 합니다.

아래는 외국어로 된 서류의 번역과 관련해서 USCIS 웹싸이트에서 퍼 온 내용입니다.

보시면 아시겠지만 어디에도 공증하라는 얘기는 없습니다. 번역자의 사인만으로 충분하고 저 뿐만 아니라 수많은 사람들이 그렇게 서류 처리해서 rfe 없이 승인 받았습니다.

애초에 공증이 필요하다는 얘기가 왜 시작되었을까를 생각해 보면 한국에서 하던 방식을 그대로 차용하지 않았을까 하는 의심이 듭니다. 저도 처음 미국 올 땐 공증 받은 서류를 미 대사관에 제출했으니까요. 하지만 적어도 미국에서 영주권 진행 과정 중에는 필요없습니다. 심심하신 분들은 이 게시판에서 공증이나 rfe관련 글을 검색해 보시면 아실 겁니다.  공증을 안 받았다는 이유로 rfe를 받은 사람은 아무도 없다는 것을.
