A fresh college graduate starts out as a Software Engineer II at Google, while a PhD degree that takes you 5-6 years to acquire generally only lets you start one level higher, as a Software Engineer III. In that time frame, you could definitely get promoted two or three times (I know some engineers who have gotten promoted three times to be Staff Engineers within 4 years). A Master's degree typically won't let you start any higher on the engineering ladder than someone with a Bachelor's but will let you start at a slightly higher salary. But again, in the 1-2 years it takes you to get a Master's, you could definitely get promoted at least once. If your goal is career advancement at Google, you're much better off investing all that time in learning about all the core technologies at Google, working on teams that are either high-profile or part of Google's core competencies, and choosing projects with solid, measurable impact. Even outside of Google, your return on investment will be much higher by focusing directly on skills that let you build more things than by getting a graduate degree.
