Solid state relays are traditionally made of thyristors (I.e. SCRs and Triacs). Optocouplers can be used to drive relays (SS or mechanical) with a small current at a lower voltage. The product you linked can be driven directly by logic (e.g. CMOS-level) outputs without having to add a separate driving circuit. The relay on that board requires 30mA@12VDC. An i/o pin of your microcontroller or processor cannot possibly deliver this. Traditionally you would add a driving circuit using a TR or FET (E.g. 2N7000). I agree to the terms of service Comment
