If you are worried about the short-term spending, buy an existing home and fix it up.
If you are not overly concerned about the cost and have an idea on what you want, by all means build one. Building cost never goes down, so if you want to build your own home, don’t put it off. BUT, this only applies to people with clear idea about what they want and have money to spend.
