The money was my wife's saving from her pat-time jobs while in college. It was a cheap house, so we could afford it. I don't think a typical upper-middle class Koreans would have bought this crappy house. But we understood what we can afford and what kind of compromise we should make. Heck, we didn't even own a car first year. Biked every where instead. The monthly payment including PMI was cheaper than the typical rent. My wife and I were doing 50% RA at the school and that was enough to get a loan for this house. You can't get a loan from a different state.
