Can I Uber while on unemployment?

    Hi.

    I recently got laid off and applied for UI benefit.

    But to pay rent and expenses, I have to do a side hustle, such as Uber or Lyft.

    Would it hurt the amount of UI I usually get weekly?

    The UI check amount is $420/wk and I can make about 6-700 by doing Uber weekly.

      It depends on your UI. If you have to report Uber’s income, they may not want to pay to you considering it as your new job.

      California court recently declared uber/lyft as employee. If you live in California, UBER is considered as work and may interfere with UI.

      Uber does not pay a driver as full-time. Meaning … Uber won cases not to pay any benefits or health insurance. There was interesting cases sued by a female Uber driver who had been a prostitute previously….she initially won the case against Uber (even without a lawyer!!! she was smart.), but I remember Uber won eventually although Uber paid a good lump of money to her for the settlement. So, 1099 as your own business, but still can be considered as your biz, even if not an employee.

      That can provide a good reason not to be able to receive any UI.
