And there is a retired MSgt Snuffy who got deployed Afghanistan once or twice and never seen any devastation that you described above, receiving benefits and work in GS positions after 20 years in Air Force. As I stated on above comment, it really depends on what job you have. Some AFSCs, you don’t even get PCSed for 4 years of your military career assuming that you are gonna get out after first enlistment.
The one of the reasons why people recommend Air Force and Navy is that to experience cruelty of war at this moment is slim to none; of course, you don’t know how future goes on, but especially as E-1 through E-4 with jobs that do not participate in ‘actual war,’ without certain certificates and experiences on your jobs and you got deployed there to participate in war and see all flying friends’ corpses? I’m sorry but you are unfortunate as fuck.
Now, Army and Marine Corps are different stories. I don’t know in detail, but your statement might be true. Though I’m not saying that it’s not realistic and it might happen for sure, but I would bet my life to receive benefits and join Air Force or Navy as it is really low chance to go to the war, aim at human beings with M4 and shoot, and see how their heads are exploded in front of my face.
