만약 f***ing kimchi가 아니라 f***ing soul food라고 했다면 미국 사람들의 반응이 어땠을까요?
그래도 영화일 뿐이라고 쿨~하게 이해를 했을지요.
“한국인이 아닌 영화 감독들은 절대 한국인을 깔보는 인종차별자 캐릭터를 자기 영화에 넣을 수 없다는 얘기가 됩니다”
: 흑인들끼리 nigga라는 표현을 쓰지만 백인들은 흑인을 지칭할 때 니거라는 말을 쓸 수 없습니다. 표현의 자유도 좋지만 세상에는 금기라는 것도 있지요. 특히 인종의 용광로인 melting pot인 미국에서 저런 인종문제는 굉장히 민감한 주제죠.
제가 감독에게 화가 난 부분은 그의 수상소감 때문입니다.
“I want to dedicate this award for my fellow Mexicans, the ones who live in Mexico, I pray that we can find and build a government that we deserve, and the ones that live in this country, who are a part of the latest generation of immigrants in this country, I just pray that they can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones who came before and built this incredible immigrant nation.”
멕시칸들이 ‘same dignity’를 누리기를 바라면서 한국인들을 fucking kimchi라고 비하하는 것을 아무렇지도 않게 영화적 cliche로 이해하는 님의 이중잣대가 어이가 없군요.
