2. 이민법에서의 졸업 기준은 ‘졸업식일 (학위 수여일)’이 아니라 ‘학업 종료일’입니다.

위에 쓴 ‘공식 졸업 날짜’ 12월1일이 가을학기 졸업생 ‘학위 수여일’ 같은데요, 그것이 기준이 아닐 수 있습니다. 다른 수업을 이미 다 들었으면 마지막 남은 논문을 마치는 9월이 이민법상 ‘학업 종료일’이 되는 것이 원칙입니다.

중요한 것은 학교 International Student Office (ISO)에서 SEVIS에 등록하는 학업 종료일로서, 그것이 이민법상의 공식 졸업일입니다. 이것이 보통 얘기하는 학교 졸업식일/학위 수여일과 다를 수도 있으므로, ISO에서 어떻게 처리하는 꼭 확인하시기 바랍니다. (그리고, 그 결과를 여기서 써 주시면 감사하겠습니다.)

‘졸업’이라는 단어는 ‘졸업식’과 혼동될 수 있으므로, 사용하지 않는 것이 좋다.

Yes. A student who only has the thesis or equivalent remaining may either apply for pre-completion OPT or post-completion OPT while completing the thesis/dissertation.
